Angel - Season 2 impressions (episode 20)

- Wesley is still struggling with his leadership role; he doesn't know how to keep Angel in line yet.
Interesting that an upset Angel stops thinking and planning and just wants to jump right into action. In these moments, he reminds me of Liam, young Angelus or Spike.
To proceed the way Wesley suggests makes a lot more sense and it's a good thing the jump to another dimension doesn't work right away.
Angel: "We're gonna open up another portal and we're going in after her."
Wesley: "Angel, I don't think that's a good idea."
Angel: "Wesley, I don't think I care."
Wesley: "But we're completely unprepared. We should go back to the hotel, do some research."
The host slowly sinks down below the level of the bar, opening and closing his mouth with no words coming out.
Angel: "I don't wanna research, alright? I wanna jump through the big swirly hole thingy and save Cordelia!"
Angel starts to read from the book, but Wesley grabs him by the arm and pulls him around to face him.
Wesley: "We might never be able to get back!"
Angel quietly: "It's Cordy."
After a beat Wesley nods and steps back.
- Gunn officially leaves the team:
Gunn: "Last night I lost one of my crew. - I should have been there, but... - I'm sorry but Wes said the trip was one way and-and I can't! - I know that makes me... (Shakes his head) I don't know what it makes me. But I figured I just owed to you to tell you face to face. (Angel stays silent) - Wish you luck. - Please. Find her."
Gunn and Angel look at each other for a moment then Gunn turns and leaves.
I noticed that Gunn talks to Angel here and not directly to Wesley; Wesley on the other hand doesn't say good-bye to Gunn, he doesn't react much to Gunn leaving at all. IMO, this shows that he's quite upset by what happened. Gunn is his best friend right now, so while he knows that Gunn has other responsibilities, he most likely feels abandoned all the same.
I believe that Wesley feels as if things are falling apart just as his father has predicted: Cordelia is gone, Angel doesn't listen to him when Wes makes decisions, Gunn leaves. As if all of this wasn't bad enough, a Wolfram & Hart lawyer shows up to tell them that they might get evicted from the hotel soon.
- Cordelia meets Fred.
Fred must be very strong to survive for 5 years in a different dimension all by herself.
- Wesley figures out how to get to the Pylea dimension without the team being split up.
Also Gunn decides to come along after all. (Personally, I'm convinced Gunn comes along, because he knows Wesley needs his support and friendship. :-))
- Angel gets to enjoy a bit of sunshine. :-)
Angel's convertible lands on the grassy ground between some trees on sunny Pylea, the screams of the passengers resonating through the air, then comes to a screeching halt. Angel jumps in his seat.
Angel: "The sun. Daylight. Quick. Hand me a blanket. Hand me a blanket or I'm gonna catch on fire!"
Wesley scrambles for a blanket as Angel tries to pull up his leather jacket to cover his head.
Angel: "Hand me a blanket! I'm gonna catch on fire!"
Wesley hands him a blanket but instead of taking it, Angel looks down at his hands, then around himself.
Angel: "Why am I not on fire?"
- The team discovers that the book didn't travel with them and they can't return that easily.
How comes I'm totally not amazed. :-) Guys, whenever someone was transferred to Pylea the book stayed behind. Why would it be different for you? Hm, maybe the thought if the book was surrounded by metal it would be moved along, too.
- Loved this scene for Wesley getting really enthusiastic and shouting "I think we're winning."
As a character, Wesley is a lovely mix between book-heavy researcher and fearless fighter. That's pretty rare: Even in the Jossverse, character usually prefer either research or fighting. With Wes I get the impression he likes both equally. He used to be scared of fights in season 3 of Buffy, but that was due to being overwhelmed by difficult situations after he had basically no experience.
Wesley: "We've been through a lot together, fellows. Fought a lot of fights. Faced some pretty steep odds."
Gunn to Angel: "I take the twenty on the left, you take the fifty on the right."
Angel: "Okay."
And with that they engage the warriors surrounding them. And since for some reason the Pyleans only come at them one at a time, they don't do too badly.
Wesley jumps up on the block, twirling a sword he just liberated from one of their pursuers.
Wesley: "I think we're winning!"
Smash cut to the four of them bound and on their knees in the dirt in front of the block.
- Cordelia hit the checkpot: Due to her visions, she has been made ruler of Pylea. Here's her impressive title in full. :-)

Yeah, and the writers occasionally decide to remember that. More on her later :).
