Angel - Season 2 impressions (episode 14)
Jan. 10th, 2006 01:27 amThe Thin Dead Line
A summary can be found here.
- I didn't care much about the zombie policemen plot, but I liked how the story interweaves the arcs of different characters.
- In the first shot, we see that Angel has started to miss his friends. Yep, the Hyperion hotel would get rather lonely after a while.
- Cordy briefly reverts to her former tactlessness. I have to admit it's quite refreshing to see that she can still be insensitive. After all, it's rather obvious neither mother nor daughter are very happy right now.
Francine: "Ah. I'm Francine Sharp, my daughter Stephanie. I'm a friend of Virginia's from the club."
Wesley: "Oh, right, the country club."
Cordy: "One of Virginia's *rich* friends? (Wesley, Stephanie and Francine give her a look.) You certainly came to the right place.
- Anne and Gunn already knowing one another is a very nice idea of the writers and makes perfect sense.
- I love how in this episode many different character threads are woven together again:
Anne asks Gunn, Wesley and Cordy for assistance. At the same time, Angel gets on the same case and works on it together with Kate.
- Nice moment when Cordelia tries to Anne:
Anne hands her the blankets: "How are your laundry folding skills?"
Cordy: "I'm an actress. I can - fake it."
- Kate at her father's grave is an excellent scene. Very moving - and not sappy. Nice touch that Angel is there at her side considering he has some big time father issues as well.
- Wesley gets shot! I was really worried despite knowing he plays a role in later seasons.
Gunn is very concerned for him which shows that they have become close friends in a relatively short time... But then Wesley searched for him in the streets to keep him safe, so they affection goes both ways.
- Hey, why doesn't Gunn bring Wesley to the hospital right away without stopping at Anne's shelter? Wesley needs medical attention *right now*. I also don't think that making Wesley walk around a lot is the best course of action.
- Interesting to see that Angel helps Cordy, Wesley, Gunn and Anne to defeat the police zombies without them being aware of this. It fits: Angel(us) likes to pull the strings from the background. And, of course, Angel would see it as some kind of atonement for what he has done so far.
- Angel: "Hi. - I thought you might want to know I took care of our little cop problem."
Kate hands Angel a file: "Crime reports from that precinct. - Up until three months ago there was a murder every two weeks, a rape every two days, a robbery every hour and a half. And that's what we just gave back to the people of that community."
Angel: "I can live with that."
Kate: "You learn to live with a lot of things, don't you?"
Angel hands the file back to her: "Yeah."
Kate: "This job is making me crazy."
Angel: "I know the feeling."
Nice to see that Angel and Kate still connect despite their arguments. I don't want to see them romantically involved, but I really like their friendship. They have several things in common. The most obvious is how they related to their fathers, although Kate tried to please her father right until the end whereas Angel gave up trying to win his father's respect. Beyond that they have similar personalities: Both are introverts and are unsure on how to connect to others. I always get the impression that it takes them some effort to make friends and let others come close to them.
- Cordelia telling Angel to stay away.
The camera pulls back through the window into Wesley's room, into the corridor to reveal Angel standing by the nurses' desk, watching. Angel turns to leave only to find Cordy standing right behind him.
Cordy: "What are you doing here?"
Angel: "I heard about Wesley."
Cordy: "Well, that's great. Too bad it takes a gunshot wound to make you give a crap. - Wesley doesn't need you right now. *We* don't need you. - You walked away. Do us a favor and just stay away."
After a beat Cordy walks past Angel into Wesley's room. Angel watches as she hands a cup of coffee to Gunn them leans down to brush Wesley's hair. Then turns and walks away down the corridor.
While I can understand her reaction, I was wondering if Wesley wouldn't have been happy to see Angel cared enough about him to show up. I think it should have been up to Wesley to decide if he wants to see Angel or not.
Like the little twist that Gunn gets the traditional female role and acts as nurse to Wesley while Cordy gets the traditional male part and acts as the guardian outside the room.

Date: 2006-01-10 06:34 am (UTC)Kate and Angel: what you said. They're similar people who make good friends, and are on a similar arc, if you look at it. Not a coincidence that they end up hitting rock bottom at the same time.
Cordy telling Angel to stay away: *gags self as comment would be too spoilery for the rest of the show*

Since I watched 2.17 by now, I see that her resolution to stay distant from Angel was short-lived... More regarding my take on this when I post for 2.17.

Wesley: That's a dumb plan.
Cordelia: Wesley got a degree in dumb planning from Angel University. He sat at the foot of the master and learned well how to plan dumbly!
I laughed so hard when I first heard that line that we had to keep running the DVDs back. Cordelia hadn't really clicked with me up to that point -- which is funny, b/c she is one of my favorites now. But that moment did it for me.
I think there is some kind of explanation for not taking Wes straight to the ambulance, but mostly it's so he can suffer dramatically and keep us in suspense.
I've seen some lovely post-ep fics about Wesley in the hospital; I'll have to see if I can dig them up.
Some people 'ship Gunn/Anne based on this episode, and I would have liked to see a bit more of her (this isn't the last time we see her, but she's not a regular fixture).

Gunn/Anne: I can easily imagine that they were a couple at one time, but I'll stick with Gunn/Wesley all the same. :-)
