This Year's Girl

A great episode! Liked it a lot.

- The shared dream sequences between Faith and Buffy are brilliant. Faith still see herself as the victim and Buffy as her evil counterpart.

In the first dream, they actually get along for awhile until Faith remembers again that Buffy stabbed her.
Faith mentions that they are preparing the room for the arrival of Buffy's little sister - which must be an early hint of Dawn.

In the second dream sequence, Faith is what she would like to be deep inside: A young girl having a picnic with her father, well, her father-figure Mayor Wilkins. As always their interaction is great.
The picnic gets interrupted by Buffy viciously murdering Wilkins and then pursuing Faith.
The scene when Faith drops into the open grave, Buffy jumps in behind her, but it's Faith who escapes the grave is brilliant. Love the dream imagery. Love that Faith casts Buffy as this evil unstoppable force in her dreams. (And of course, Buffy always carries Faith's knife.)

- Riley is back from the hospital. I'm happy to see that he got out.
He's obviously been demoted. He's also no longer sure the Iniative is his family. And he's unsure about many things. (Did I mention that I really like Riley? :-))

Riley: (sighs) Give me an order. It's what I do, isn't it? Follow orders?
Buffy: You don't have to.
Riley: Don't I? All my life that's what I've been groomed to do. They say jump, I ask how high? I get the job done. Just don't know
if it's the right job anymore.
[...]
Riley: See. Now that's where you and I are different. I just suck at the whole gray-area thing.

- Faith wakes up and is disoriented. Without her cool outfits and her trademark makeup she very much looks like a lost little girl. We quickly see that she's still very willing to use violence when it suits her purposes, i.e. when she hurts the young woman in the hospital and takes her clothes.

- Faith walking through the streets from Sunnydale is another great sequence. She drifting through the streets like a ghost. Life has moved on without her - and she hasn't even been missed by anyone. All she can do is look through the window and observe Buffy living her life.

- Buffy and Faith facing one another for the first time. Wow! It's also fascinating to see what has happened through Faith's eyes. Faith has simply patched together what happened to Buffy from little bits of information and arrives at her own conclusions, i.e. Buffy did so much for Angel (beat up Faith twice to save him) and now she has a different boyfriend...

- The Scoobies really try to bond with Spike, don't they? Seems Spike doesn't only appeal to a large part of the Buffy audience, but also to Buffy's team. They always try to connect to him, ask him for help or help him in turn - and he pushes them away... He's obviously trying to keep his distance and guard his "Big Bad" image.

- Ah, the Council has its own spies, i.e. the nurse.

- Wilkins message to Faith is sweet. Even though he's evil. (And the demon who delivered the package to Faith... That was not a thankful task. Faith obviously never considered not to kill the messenger.)

- Faith going for Buffy's mom. Yup, could see that coming. Fact is Faith is viciously envious of all the things Buffy has (and in her opinion doesn't deserve). She would be drawn to Buffy's mom.

- Love how much faith Joyce has in her daughter. It drives Faith nuts, of course.

- Oh drat, Joyce will have to spend a lot of money on having the house fixed - again.

- Body swapping! Cool!

Yes, like Faith's "little Miss Muffet, curds and wheys" remark in the Graduation dream. Love the absolute synchronocity of the bed preparing, too.

Love that Faith casts Buffy as this evil unstoppable force in her dreams. (And of course, Buffy always carries Faith's knife.)

Yes. At this point, Faith still tries to deal by blaming everything that happened on someone else. Conversely, note that while the other Scoobies are all for locking Faith up, Buffy's first thought is that she might be wandering around without her memory, or with her memory but with regrets. Let's just say subsequent events initialize a change on both counts.

Body swapping! Cool!

Every show has a bodyswapping episode sooner or later, but few use the concept as well as BTVS or for such a big character thing. Prepare for two stunning performances by SMG and Eliza Dushku.

the body-swap episode is my absolute favorite (and the source of this icon) but the setup ep is good too.

i LOVE Spike's response when Giles & Xander ask him about Faith. this was one of the first eps i saw, and that's the moment i really fell for the character -- it's also a very meta remark (don't you people remember that I hate you all?)

can't wait for you to see "who are you?" -- squee!
