Pangs

Here's a summary for the episode.

- Angel is back and like in the very beginning he watches Buffy from the shadows. Seems that he set out for some rescuing after Doyle had his vision. Quite odd, because I'm not sure Buffy really needs Angel's assistance in this episode. She has survived far more difficult situations.

Even when Angel's a good guy I'm not fully comfortable with this habit of his. It reminds me too much of his stalkerish tendencies, of a hunter pursuing his prey.

It's interesting to note that Spike does the same to Angel or Buffy, i.e. watching them from afar and waiting for his best chances to strike.

Is this typical for vampires? Or something Angel and Spike do in particular?

- Buffy can feel it when Angel is nearby, she simply doesn't know what this feeling means.

- Anya: Her frankness never fails to amuse me.
I love a ritual sacrifice.

Look at him. Have you ever seen anything so masculine? [...] I'm imagining having sex with him right now.

Her interaction with Xander is a lot of fun:
Anya : (Feeling his forehead.) Your head is moist. Oh! You're sick. Well, you can't go to work.
Xander : (Anya pushes him back on the bed.) Uh. Oh. Anya?
Anya : You're pasty and wet and disgusting. They can dig without you.
Xander : (Groaning.) Look-- I don't really feel that bad.
Anya : I inflicted a lot of putrefying diseases on men when I was an avenging demon, and you look like you're getting all of them.
Xander : (Giving in.) Ok. I'll stay. But you should go. You could catch it.
Anya : (Perkily.) We'll die together. It's romantic. Let me get your trousers off. (She begins to undress him.)
Xander : You're a strange girlfriend.
Anya : I'm a girlfriend?
Xander : Uh...There's a chance I'm delirious.
Anya : Ah, yes. Well, whatever it is that's making you sick, so far, I like it.

- Spike: OK, he's got a chip in his head and can't attack anyone. For an aggressive vampire that's not a good thing. But why the heck does this lead to him stumbling around with a ratty blanket around his shoulders?! He really is a bit of a drama queen: When he suffers he has to do it with lots of ratty style. Maybe reading Charles Dickens in his youth also inspired him.

Of course, he might feel a tad threatened. After all, he could probably not defend himself when attacked.

- One theme of this episode is not belonging. Angel is watching Buffy from afar, Spike is walking through the town peering into windows. It's possible to draw a connection to the ghosts of the Indians Native Americans who've been turned into outsiders as well.

- All Buffy wants this time around is nice, quiet, peaceful Thanksgiving. Without having to clean the kitchen afterwards. Everything has to be just perfect. As she's Buffy, of course, she doesn't get her wish.

- Harmony dumping Spike is a great scene. Harmony was awful as a human girl, but as a vampire she's kind of sweet.

Cut to Harmony's crypt. She's advancing towards Spike yelling at him.
Harmony : Get out.
Spike : (Leaning against a wall.) But, baby, this is where I belong.
Harmony : (Pointing.) Out. I mean it. I've been doing a lot of reading, and I'm in control of my own power now, so we're through.
She backs up as Spike advances towards her. He grabs her abruptly. He begins to kiss her shoulder. She looks uncertain.
Spike : You don't mean that.
Harmony : Yes, I do. I...I do. (Spike picks her up and carrys her over to the bed.) I mean it a lot.
Spike : See? I knew you'd end up welcoming be back (He begins to stroke her legs.) With open...Arms. (He leans into kiss her.)
Harmony : No. (She pushes him away.) I'm powerful, and I'm beautiful, and I don't need you to complete me. (She goes around the bed and lifts the matress revealing a stake which she grabs.) And you're mean. (She stands up holding the stake up.)

- Their discussion on how to deal with the spirit warrior is interesting. Everybody is trying to be not hostile and use politically correct language apart from Spike who gives them a very realistic demon perspective.

Spike : I just can't take all this mamby-pamby boo-hooing about the bloody indians.
Buffy : Uh, the preferred term--
Spike : You won. All right? You came in and you killed them and you took their land. That's what conquering nations do. It's what Caesar did, and he's not going around saying, "I came, I conquered, I felt really bad about it." The history of the world isn't people making friends. You had better weapons, and you massacred them. End of story.
Buffy : Well, I think the spaniards actually did a lot of-- Not that I don't like spaniards.
Spike : Listen to you. How you gonna fight anyone with that attitude?
Willow : We don't wanna fight anyone.
Buffy : I just wanna have thanksgiving.
Spike : Heh heh. Yeah...Good luck.
Willow : If we could talk to him--
Spike : You exterminated his race. What could you possibly say that would make him feel better?

- The scooby gang as bicycle cavalry charging in for the rescue is a lovely twist on the classic western.

- The evil look of glee on Spike's face after Xander has blurted out that Angel is here is a neat little moment.

- Angel is given a hard time in this episode: Everyone believes he's evil again which gets tiring to him after a while. (I haven't been evil in a long time.) In addition to this, he has to find out there's a potential new love interest in Buffy's life.

No, Angel wasn't really needed for this episode to help Buffy. His presence is more or less an excuse, a set up for the AtS episode it leads into. More about this once you've seen said episode.

Pangs is fun, basically, and in addition to what you named, I also love Spike yelling at Buffy to make the bear go away.*g* Such a drama queen.

Stalking: well, Harmony doesn't do it, but then Harmony is not your typical vampire, either. Angel certainly does it with or without his soul. Remember how he first saw Buffy to begin with? And if you stretch it, you could say Darla did it when selecting young Liam for herself in the tavern, observing him, long before he saw her in the alley.

Such a drama queen.

He's such an ambiguous character. All macho in one moment, all drama queen in the next. :-)

Remember how he first saw Buffy to begin with?
Yes, and even then I didn't approve of his little habit. Observing others without their permission is just so intrusive. I would not be pleased if a guy told me he had been watching me for years, even if he claimed it was for my own safety.
