Angel - Season 1 impressions (episode 2)

My impressions behind the cut.
Angel is growing on me very quickly. It certainly helps that I like Angel, Cordelia and Doyle and their interactions are just plain fun to watch.
Cordelia is a delight in the episode: She's so excited about everything and eager to do great.
- The calling cards she has made for Angel's private detective agency and Angel's reaction to them. The entire scene made me smile.
- And then how she hands out the calling cards in the club: “Hi. Being harassed by someone or something? Just dial us up, day or night. (to the guy) You look troubled. Are you troubled - or is that just your lazy eye? - Anyway, call us, we are very discreet.”
- The way she tries to type on the computer, but is just hopeless with it.
She's also lost none of her bluntness:
Cordelia: (to Angel) "I guess the single life’s particularly tough on you.”
Angel: “Why?”
Cordy: “Well, a couple of hundred years ago all you had to worry about was a hang over. Today, because of your curse thingy, - you can’t sleep with anyone - or else you might feel a moment of true happiness, lose your soul, become evil again, and – kill everyone.”
Angel: “Thanks Cordelia, I always appreciate your perspective.”
Cordy: “No problem. Hey, the last thing I want is to show up at the office and find that I’m working for a homicidal monster.”
Her explanation for the state of her flat is neat: “Yes, - okay? Is it my fault that maid service was interrupted? It was supposed to go, home, hotel, hotel, husband. Now can we move on?”
Angel's social skills are a little rusty. As he says: "This socializing thing is brutal.".
Yeah, Angel, asking women if they are in need of some rescuing is the way to go. I'd like to be rescued by you... :-)
I like his understated humour and that he's able to make fun of himself:
Kate: “Well, I’ll tell you what: I can go where ever I want and ah, - you can go to hell.”
Angel watches her walk into the bar: “Been there, done that.”
Doyle is such a nice guy. And I mean that in a positive way. I especially liked the scene in whic he tries to sound out Cordy about how she feels concerning demons. :-)
I like Kate: She feels very honest and straight forward to me. I like characters like this.
The plot had a nice twist: At first I was suspicious of the guy, then I was surprised/confused because the unpresuming woman was behind it all - and then everything fell nicely into place.
Felt sorry for the bartender. He gets all the blame in the end, even though it wasn't his fault. His parents will wonder forever on what they did wrong.
The end of the episode is very poignant.
Angel pacing: “I know you guys have been working hard. I mean, - you’ve been cooped up inside a lot. And to show my appreciation I was thinking, - the night being, you know, young and all – that the three of us - could – well, should, - You know, maybe, - go out, - you know, for fun.
Cordelia: “Or we can go home.”
Doyle: “And you can sit in the dark alone.”
They get up and start to leave.
Angel breathing a sigh of relief: “God, yes! Thank you.”
Goes to sit down at his desk and after a moment the light goes off as Doyle and Cordy walk out the door.

Date: 2005-11-10 11:35 pm (UTC)There will be more of Kate -- I think she's an underappreciated character. And yes, very nice plot twist with the identity of the demon.

Date: 2005-11-11 05:27 am (UTC)Kate: as you know, I like her a lot. She got a lot of flak at the time of the original broadcast, but I think in retrospect fans have settled to recognizing she was a good element of the show.

I don't see here as a romantic interest for Angel. She's a bit attracted to him, but he doesn't even register her in that way. On the one hand, he's still totally focused on Buffy, on the other hand she's not his type. She's too independent.
I know that sounds odd, because both Darla and Buffy are independent. Don't know - it's just a feeling I have. Both Buffy and Darla have a certain ethereal quality, at times they seem to need protection. So far Kate come across as someone who can fend for herself and would not want a protector.
