Yesterday I watched the first three episodes of the second Buffy seasons. So far I'm already quite impressed.

I was pleasantly surprised by When She Was Bad:

It isn't just "Happy Slaying Time" all over again, but Buffy has actually been affected by what happened before. I loved it that her experiences so far make her bitchy. Partly she feels as if she has been used by everyone so far and partly she's scared of caring too much for others, because then it will hurt all the more when something happens to them. (My interpretation anyway.)

In addition to Buffy having issues, the episode also made me smile several times. Moments like these are responsible for this:

Cordelia: I mean, they promised me they'd take me to St. Croix, and then they just decide to go to Tuscany. (exhales) Art and buildings? I was totally beachless for a month and a half. No one has suffered like I have. Of course I think that that kind of adversity builds character. Well, then I thought, I already have a lot of character. Is it possible to have too much character?

And Snyder is a fun character, too. Seems I love Armin Shimerman no matter if he plays Quark or Snyder - he's just so good at being sarcastic.

Snyder: I mean, it's incredible. One day the campus is completely bare. Empty. The next, there are children everywhere. Like locusts. Crawling around, mindlessly bent on feeding and mating. Destroying everything in sight in their relentless, pointless desire to exist.

They stop. Snyder looks around, observing the students.

Giles: I do enjoy these pep talks. Have you ever considered, given your abhorrence of children, school's principal was not, perhaps, your true vocation?

The last scene of the first episode was lovely. So nice to see how Willow and Xander try to reassure Buffy that everything is alright after all.

I didn't like Some Assembly Required quite as much, but it had delightful moments. E.g. Cordelia trying to get some sympathy and failing. The following scene between Cordelia and Giles made me a) laugh out loud and b) fall in love with Giles all over again.

Cordelia: Hello! Can we deal with my pain, please?

Giles: There, there.

He pats her on the shoulder and continues up into the stacks.

Another highlight for me was Cordelia exchanging her first words with Angel while sitting in the dumpster.

Also this following scene is delightful. Even vampires haven't a chance against the power that is Cordelia:

Cordelia: I don't wanna go alone. I'm still fragile. (to Angel) Can you
take me?

Angel is in open-mouthed shock, and looks at Buffy. She gives him a stare of disapproval.

Cordelia: Great! I'll drive?

She leads the way out of the library as Angel gives Buffy another helpless look.

School Hard made me very, very happy. I was curious about it beforehand, because it's the first episode that features Spike. And even if you're not in the Buffy fandom, you have heard of Spike. He's so popular, you can't escape him. So I had actually planned on being diffident. Well, I have to admit my plan failed miserably. He's such an entertaining character I couldn't help enjoying every minute with him on screen.

I also got the feeling that the actors who played Spike and Drusilla had a lot of fun with their parts. Drusilla is just so crazy, but in some way she seems to enjoy it as her madness grants her absolute liberty.

Both Spike and Drusilla give off very modern vibes in a way, e.g. it's clear from very early on that they love television. Spike also quotes from several shows, e.g. his comment "You were my Yoda." shows us that he has not secluded himself from the modern world.

The final scene was delightful. Spike being utterly disrespectful by renaming "The Annointed One" into "The Annoying One", a judgement with which I wholeheartedly agree. And thank you, Spike, for getting rid of the little nuisance. :-)

Huh. For some reason I thought you already watched Buffy... anyway. You like the first part of S2? Hoo, boy. Just wait until the second half of the season. Just wait. The best Buffy ever gets, IMO. But heck, even the first few "mediocre" episodes of the season are damn entertaining, even the lesser ones like "Some Assembly Required."

And I adore both Spike and Dru. *g* Dru's delightfully wacky, and Spike snarks with the best baddies out there - yet he still has a very clear soft side for Dru, which makes him even more interesting.

Yes, I overall liked the first eps of season 2. I've only just watched season 1 and it's nice to see how the quality goes up gradually.

Yes. It's an ongoing issue, and what happens this season will contribute heavily.

Smile: that's one of the glories of any show penned by Joss Whedon. The dialogue. He and his minions are the masters of same.

Spike and Dru: they are a blast when watched the first time, aren't they? And yes, the actors rock in the parts.

Yes! They are shiny in the extreme.

So funny to see that Spike, the slayer of slayers and super-tough guy, is all sweetness around Drusilla. The chemistry between them reminds me more of siblings than of lovers. Of course, if they were sibling they'd definitely be of the incestuous kind. (The name Drusilla fits that impression nicely; wasn't Drusilla Caligula's favorite sister?)

Well, due to being shown a certain season 5 episode by me, you know the truth about Spike's super-tough origins already.*g* And yes, Drusilla was. (Caligula's favourite sister, that is.)

Siblings: though Drusilla sired Spike, there is something to this - when we finally see the complete dynamics of the Fanged Four (fandom nickname) in flashback, it's definitely Mummy and Daddy (i.e. Darla and Angel) and the kids. And all completely incestous, of course.

You reminded me that I liked Cordelia at first. I really should rewatch the whole series. The characters grow and change so much.

Spike! He's the main reason I kept watching the series. And the season two Spike is sooo much fun. And I am quite sure Spike is a major Star Wars fan and saw the movies when they first came out.

So far Cordelia makes me smile often; she has the snark.
Am curious to see how she develops.

And I can definitely buy that Spike's a Star Wars fan. :-)

Hi, random unknown person here. As a rabid fan of Buffy/Angel/Firefly and Star Wars, I've had a hoot reading through your LJ - mind if I friend you?

And season 2 of Buffy - if you haven't made it to the end of the season yet, you're in for a mad ride. This is as good as it gets (and I mean TV in general here, not just sci-fi)

You're very welcome to friend me. I love meeting fellow fans!

I've got two weeks vacation coming up. So I'll certainly manage to watch all of season 2. And then it's on to Angel season 1 and Buffy season 3. :-)

Hi there! Came over here via recs from friends, and I just couldn't resist the lure of 'rewatching' BtVS and AtS through the eyes of a newbie, so I came all the way back to S2 to begin reading your thoughts.

It was the episode School Hard that made me a BtVS fan. I had caught a few eps of S1, (The Witch, Out of Sight, Out of Mind, and I, Robot, I think) and thought it was a 'cute' show, but nothing I'd want to watch on a regular basis.

Then came School Hard and I was utterly fascinated by Spike and Dru. Monday nights (and then later, Tuesday, when the show changed nights) became 'must-see' TV. I didn't catch all of S3 when it first aired, but by S4 (and AtS, S1) I was completely hooked! I began taping the shows to re-watch.

It's really lovely to see your enthusiasum for a show I've loved for years! I'm looking frward to reading your take on episodes as yu watch them.

thought it was a 'cute' show, but nothing I'd want to watch on a regular basis.

I only saw bits of pieces of some Buffy episodes on TV and wasn't terribly impressed. I realise now that the episodes I saw were all from late seasons and without their context they didn't mean anything to me. I just found the monsters rather strange. We also don't get the English original here and the German translations of this show aren't that impressive. (Not that snychronized versions have to be bad: The German voices of Mulder and Scully are extraordinarily beautiful. That's a show I partly watched to listen to the voices. :-))

I'm looking frward to reading your take on episodes as yu watch them.
Welcome to my livejournal. I hope you enjoy reading.
I'm not as fast in posting as I used to be. Real Life is a bit exhausting at the moment and my reviews get longer and longer... But seeing I wrote over 100 entries already you'll find enough reading material. :-)
