Interesting. Spiegel posts an article about Harry Potter slash fanfiction:

Link to the German article:

Not too pleased with it, but it could be worse. Authors who write about slash fanfiction rarely get why it exists. It's not so much only about the p0rn, but about character development, following characters along that have chemistry - never mind their gender.

Argh... Warum betrachtet man immer Slash und Pornographie als synonyme Begriffe? Ich finde es komisch. Gibt es mehr NC-17 slash als NC-17 het im Internet?

Uh, I meant to say that in English.

Wow, you can speak German!

And I totally agree. Whenever there are articles about slash they seem to focus on the pornography part.
Similarly, whenever I read articles about fandoms the journalists seem to think that fans are weirdoes.
I really would like to see someone write about it who is part of fandom or has read more than 3 slash stories.

Not too well. But it's funny how my brain seems to organize languages. As if I had just two language mods, "Finnish" and "Foreign". When I am speaking "Foreign" I may accidentally swap the wrong language on. Rarely happens when I am writing.

As I spend so much time in strictly slash corner of the fandom, I am repeatedly surprised at the image of slash among the rest of the fandom, not to mention mundanes/non-fans. But really, I'd expect any journalist with a bit of professional curiosity to be able to write something more about slash than "it exists, there's explicit and perverse sex scenes".

Hyvää päivää! :-)
(Don't be surprised, we don't know each other yet, but I just I thought I could comment on this nonetheless!)

Wow, you can speak German! Can only agree with Thalia, that was an absolutely perfect sentence, grammar-wise and vocab-wise. :-) That was more than "not too well". ;-) I'm really in love with your mother tongue, btw, and some time ago started to teach it myself. Unfortunately, my progress is very slow and I should concentrate more on it.

Yes, I mix up languages when speaking as well - but I only mix up German and English, because I'm not fluent in other languages.

I don't understand why all the slash articles I read so far are so p0rn oriented. Maybe the journalists need some topic to spice things up and slash fits the bill nicely. But really if they had an interest they could find plenty of material, also some very interesting essays about slash written by slashers themselves. Or they could get an LJ and actually ask people why they enjoy reading/writing it.

Very interesting in as much as spiegel deals with this topic anyway, whether for good or for worse... Hm, yes, annoying that slash and porn are so quickly linked to each other. Being still quite new to all this myself, I think I've realized quite quickly that in most cases there is a great difference between the two concepts.

Some time ago, I stumbled quite accidentally over the following essay from [livejournal.com profile] skuldchan dealing with this topic. I thought it very interesting and there are some very good points in it:

Interesting, I hadn't read that angle before.

I've got several essays saved on my harddisc, but unfortunately I can't find the links or the author's names any longer.
Only one essay I could find again and here it is:

Thanks, was very interesting to read, convincing arguments, I think. I've also roamed through the author's webpage a bit... Wow, so much creativity makes me always speechless! o-o
