I've read somewhere that before the sixth HP novel was published Rowlings said the second HP novel could also have been named Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince . I'm not sure this information is correct, but nevertheless this tidbit jumpstarted my realisation that are a lot of connections between Chamber of Secrets and Half-Blood Prince.

Here are some of the connections I noticed. (The list is most likely incomplete. Also since I've always been interested in Draco, it focuses on him quite a bit.)

- In both novels, a book plays an important role. In both novels, it takes awhile until we discover who has been writing in the book. (In COS, we have Tom Riddle's diary. In HBP, we have Snape's old potions book.)

- In COS we meet Draco's father while they are shopping in Knockturn Alley.
- In HPB we meet Draco's mother while they are shopping in Diagon Alley.

- Borgin & Burkes is introduced in COS and so is the Hand of Glory Draco is so fascinated by.
- In HBP Borgin & Burkes plays an important role. Draco has purchased the Hand of Glory and is putting it to good use.

- COS has Draco joining the Quidditch team; he's very eager to win against Harry.
- HBP has Draco leaving the Quidditch team; he obviously no longer has any energy left to compete with Harry.

- In COS the trio is convinced Draco is behind what's going on and they go to great lengths to trap him. In the course of the novel, it turns out that Draco has nothing to do with what was happening.
- In HBP only Harry is convinced that Draco is up to something; Ron and Hermione are not interested in an investigation. This time it turns out that Draco *is* behind everything.

- In COS Draco is talking about wanting to help the Heir of Slytherin in his attempt to kill all Mudbloods.
- In HBP he gets his wish - and realises that he does not want to kill anyone after all. In fact he's horrified by the idea that he could have endangered anyone in Hogwarts. (This can be seen in his reaction to Fenrir's arrival or in how he describes to Dumbledore that he had to step over a body to reach the staircase to the tower.)

- The Polyjuice Potion plays a role for the first time in COS. In fact the trio uses it against Malfoy and his friends.
- In HBP the situation has turned around: This time Malfoy uses Polyjuice Potion on his friends to trick the trio.

- Moaning Myrtle appears for the first time in COS.

- COS shows us Ginny in love with Harry.
- HBP shows us Harry in love with Ginny.

Please let me know if you find more connections.

Malfoy left the Quidditch team? Did I miss that? I thought it was a one-game thing!

Also, we sorta met Narcissa in GoF, though I suppose moreso in HBP.

I got the impression that whenever a Quidditch match is going on he's not on the pitch. I'll check again to make sure.

Ooh--this is great! You came up with ones I'd completely missed.

I guess I could add that Draco also sees the necklace in CoS, the one that hurts Katie.

There's bathrooms in both--Myrtle's in the girl's room in CoS, and here she's in the boy's room.

It's the two books that feature Tom Riddle as a schoolboy.

Lucius' diary plot in CoS is one reason Draco's being sent to kill Dumbledore in HBP.

There's a lot of almost-deaths in both (the petrified kids in CoS and Katie and Ron in HBP).

Aragog appears in CoS and dies in HBP.

Oh yes, you're so right!

Hermione doesn't have a lot to do in both books. In COS she's petrified, in HBP she's mostly focusing on her love life. :-)

So many points are like mirror images, e.g. Lucius in Knockturn Alley - Narcissa in Diagon Alley, boys' bathroom - girl's bathroom. It might be possible to see HBP as a "mirror" book to COS.
